Using R and ggmap, pulled the crime data from OpenDataKC (data.kcmo.org) for 2014 and 2015. Cleaned up the set as best I could, pulled the reports with Lat/Long coordinates, broke those out and plotted them over the greater KC Metro map. Results are below. Haven't had a chance to do a "fine grain" pass on these, but I know these things suck:
- Legends missing
- Some records removed because the lat/long falls outside the bounds
- And I can't get Kansas data (contrary to what this map shows...there is, in fact, crime in KS)
I feel alright about these as a first stab at something, but there's a lot of mapping and viz functionality I'm not leveraging. For example I'd like to add an indicator if there was a firearm used in that crime or use plot.ly to get individual statistics when you hover over a point.
Whew, that being said, here's mah pictures:
**Popped an error when I tried to include the two other plots along with this one. New Users can only post one image or something? If there's any interest I can spam two more posts for the other plots.
